Cornwallis Cottage
Frequently asked Questions
What are the arrival and departure times?
To give our housekeeper enough time to prepare the cottage, check-in is from 4:00pm and check-out is by 10:00am. We’ll message before your stay if an earlier check-in looks possible, and on the day if the house is ready sooner.

What is the check-in procedure?
We’ll be in touch 14 days before arrival with full check-in details.

Is there parking nearby?
There is no private parking, but there are no parking restrictions on the surrounding streets. Alpha Place is L-shaped and the cobbled section at the front has no vehicle access, which keeps it lovely and quiet. The side section next to Cornwallis is a small dead end, which is useful for luggage drop-off.
For parking, we suggest Meeting Street or Staddon Road, or Churchfields car park on The Quay (around a 5-minute walk).

What is access like into and within Cornwallis?
-
Side garden gate (from the vehicle-access section of Alpha Place) — ideal for bikes and boards. There are a few steps up into the garden.
-
At the front of the house there are three wide steps into the property.
-
Inside, there is a step up from the kitchen into the laundry room and WC.
-
The stairs to the first floor are slightly steeper and the treads slightly higher than modern regulations (typical of an 18th-century cottage).
-
There is a step down into the family bathroom.

Do you allow children?
Yes — children are welcome. We ask guests to bring their own travel cot if required. A Tripp Trapp high chair can be provided on request. Please note the stairs are steeper than modern staircases, so the cottage may not suit very young children. We have a stair gate that can be positioned at the top. There is also a low wall above the stone steps in the garden, and behind the bed in the attic.
-
We ask that children don’t eat in the sitting room.
-
The garden isn’t suitable for ball games.

Do you allow dogs?
Yes — Cornwallis is dog friendly. We welcome one well-behaved dog.
-
£50 dog cleaning fee per stay.
-
The garden is walled and secure, with artificial lawn, decking and paving.
-
There are great walks from the door, and Westward Ho! Beach (plus many pubs and restaurants in Appledore) are dog friendly.
-
There’s an outdoor hose for muddy paws and one spare dog bowl under the sink. Please bring your own dog towels.
-
Dogs are not allowed upstairs (stair gate provided).
-
Dogs are not allowed on furnishings. We provide covers for the kitchen seating if needed, but please don’t encourage dogs onto the sofas.
-
Please don’t take dogs into the sitting room when dirty or wet — they should be cleaned/dried after walks.
-
Dogs should sleep in the kitchen at night.
-
Please clear any dog mess from the lawn, bag it and place it into a main bin liner (not loose into the bins). Please then rinse the area.
-
Please don’t throw anything into the flower beds (they’re cleared by hand).

What is the bedroom and bathroom set-up?
We have three bedrooms sleeping six guests, all generously sized and dressed with Egyptian cotton linen.
-
First-floor king bedroom with a modern gas fire set into the chimney breast and a discreet wall-mounted TV.
-
First-floor twin which can be made up as a super-king on request (£30 set-up fee).
-
Large first-floor family bathroom with separate bath and walk-in shower.
-
Second-floor attic master suite with a super-king bed, small writing desk/dressing table and an en-suite shower room (hairdryer provided).

What amenities does the kitchen have?
The kitchen is well equipped for everyday cooking and special meals. Alongside the basics you’ll find: a cafetière, Nespresso machine, milk frother, hand blender, microwave, large Le Creuset casserole dish, retro fridge-freezer, dishwasher, washing machine and dryer.

Can I order a food delivery?
Yes — Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and Tesco all deliver to the house. We recommend arranging a delivery for ease. John’s of Appledore also do wonderful hampers.

What are the village amenities?
Appledore has everything you need within a 5–15 minute stroll. Rather than one busy strip, you’ll find independent cafés, welcoming pubs, restaurants and unique shops tucked between traditional homes and along the Quay — no chains, just local businesses full of character.
-
Fish and chips and a great sourdough pizza takeaway are both within a 5–7 minute walk.
-
John’s of Appledore on the Quay has a convenience store on one side and a high-end deli on the other, with freshly baked goods, artisan cheeses, quality meats and carefully chosen treats. They also offer home-cooked dishes in their freezer section for easy evenings in.
-
There’s also a local fishmonger along the dock selling fresh fish year-round.
